Paperless? Uh, not today.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. Just informing. Ok, I’m complaining. We’re a paperless office. We’ve worked for a decade trying adapt to this soulless beast called EMR. And like most pain, after a while you get used to it. But now we’re testing for coronavirus. Welcome home paper. Breaking News on Covid-19... 1 Covid-19 test = 9 pages of paper. Patient registration, Demographics, CDC PUI and Case Report, Lab requisitions. Copy, scan, fax, repeat. Repeat? Yes. Forms must be faxed to the CDC before each test and faxed again after each test result. Of course, we also call each patient. Otherwise, what’s the point? That’s 1 patient tested. Did I mention, as a private family physician office, that we don’t get paid anything for this test? Yep, Zero dollars. The lab gets paid. Whoever invented it, wrapped it in plastic, and delivered it gets paid. But not a cent comes to our office for this test. But it’s not like anybody’s actually putting their life on the life to do it... oh, wait. Yeah, there’s that.
